How Much Does it Cost to Develop a Web site?

One of the most often asked questions I hear is, how much does it cost? OK, everyone interested in a site asks me that, and who can blame them? That is exactly what I would want to know as well.

Unfortunately, it is a difficult question to answer because Web sites can do so many different things and can apply to so many types of businesses and organizations. But, that answer doesn't satisfy most people, so next I explain that there are three required costs associated with developing a Web site, plus two others you should take into consideration.

First off, a domain name, or URL (Uniform Resource Locator), is the www.yourcompany.com that people type in to view your Web site.

Generally the first step is to select a domain name and get it registered. It is best to let your Web developer assist you with choosing your Web address so it is set up correctly, pointing to the proper servers and purchased through a reputable company, right from the beginning. Usually, the client offers some ideas and the developer builds on those ideas, then presents options for your domain name based on availability.

Now, cost category number two revolves around the actual design, development and coding of your new Web site. This starts by discussing what goals you have and what information you want on the site. After that, a sketch is developed based on that conversation. A professional Web site should be custom-built based on your exact needs and goals as well as the nature of your particular field or industry.

Once you approve the sketch, the rest of the site is built. This approval process is essential for the client, and your feedback should be considered and incorporated before development continues.

The third fundamental fee is called Web site hosting. Once you have your name and site complete, it is necessary to put it on a server that is very fast and reliable. Hosting refers to placing all your Web site files and code on a computer dedicated to making your site display and function properly and it must be connected to the Internet via a very fast, always on connection. That way, any time any person wants to view your site, even if it is many people at the same time, it is always available and functioning properly.

In addition to storing the Web site files, you should expect e-mail accounts that reflect your domain name (ie, matt@mgmdesign.com) and detailed site statistics that are developed to be complete, yet simple, for you to use.

At this point, your site is complete and live on the Internet, so technically the three costs I have outlined above are all that are necessary to have a fully functioning Web site developed from start to finish.

However, there are two more costs that should be at least considered, if not planned for and included in your budget.

The first is promotion. Most people expect their developer to register a new site with the main search engines and it is important for the person you hire to know how to do that.

And, while most offer a free option, search engines are always changing their policies and submission guidelines and additional charges may have to be paid to those companies in order to get listed. And, as with any business, it is important to remember that getting people in the door is one of the keys to success. A strong marketing plan is essential to a Web site's success.

Finally, you should also plan for a final cost, which is maintenance and upkeep of your site. This is handled on a case-by-case basis; however, it is important to establish a relationship with a reputable developer who you can count on to be there when you need assistance with your Web site into the future.
